The Fool

A fool is a man who thinks he is wise
But a wise man is one who knows quite otherwise
And knows himself fully a fool

A fool is a man who to power aspires
But a wise man is one who has deeper desires
Though he thinks himself only a fool

A fool is a man who would fall for all lies
But a wise man is one who knows sorrow from false sighs
Even though he is only a fool

If Fool is a man, then Man is a fool
Though a wise man knows well he is merely a tool
So think what you will, but heed my advice—
Wise is to fool, as fool is to wise

Author's Comments

"True wisdom is less presuming than folly. The wise man doubteth often, and changeth his mind; the fool is obstinate, and doubteth not; he knoweth all things but his own ignorance."
~Akhenaton

"The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool."
~Touchstone (from Shakespeare's As You Like It)

Written for :iconwrittenwordaddiction:'s contest in belated celebration of April Fool's Day.

Did you write this????
If so I think you did a good job on it...It's so good that I just thought you might have found it in a philosophy book...
No insult intended!!! :stupidme:

Thank you! :aww: I'm not insulted, it's quite a compliment. It shows that you think it's good enough to have been previously published and that makes me feel all special and stuffs.

And yes, I did write this, as you may have gathered. I guess sometimes the muse likes me...? (Perhaps pity for the other times when she bludgeoned my ego to a bloody pulp instead...?)
:iconsakanoue:
"If Fool is a man, then Man is a fool" - Perfection, very Wildian... just so amazing. I heart your work so much!

A sound trouncing of the Ego is important every now and then...it moves one into a period of agonizing reappraisal that can result in a renewed expression of creativity and self confidence!!!!!!
It also puts one's feet back firmly on the ground!!!!
It would appear that you have been able to repair the 'bloody pulp' and come back stronger...After all, isn't that what the struggle is all about???
Enjoy it while it lasts...later on in life, when you find success and comfort, you will think of these tough days with a certain fondness and nostalgia!!! (All the Great Ones do!!!)
:peace:

When I say "work" I only mean writing. Everything else is just odd jobs.

Thank you! I'm so glad you like my poems, and I'm honored that you would compare me to Wilde, he's such an amazing author.
:iconorphicfiddler:
My pleasure. And your contest had an excellent prompt, so much fun to write about. :D
:iconkitit21:
I loved every part of it
its so incredibly philosophical
did you interrupt your rhymey sheme to emphasize the last line?
Part of me thinks it might sound better if you flipped it
"fool is to wise, as wise is to fool"
That way it fits the rest. ^-^ just a suggestion though

ignore me if you want =D
