Contemplations by *orphicfiddler:iconorphicfiddler:

Contemplations

Moonlight
Quite alone in the dark night
With the faint sound of whishing
That emanates softly, so softly
And curls with a swishing
Of tails from the
Vast rows of trees

But I—
Quite alone in the dark night—
Stand and stare at the white light
Of the flickering lamps
(Glowing softly, so softly)
Leaving bright blossom stamps
‘Gainst the wallpaper dark

And I—
Quite alone in the dark night—
Wander close to a dim bridge
With its webwork of beams
Every filament glistens
(Shining softly, so softly)
Crane to them, he who listens
Hears the night echoes ring

So I—
Quite alone in the dark night—
Traverse forth on my dim bridge
And stare at the waves
(Flowing softly, so softly)
The hills and the caves
Of my watery realms

My heart—
Quite alone in the dark night—
Catches patterns in silver
From the moon on the sands
(Sparkling softly, so softly)
And I trace with my hands
The path I would walk

For I—
Quite alone in the dark night—
Long to wander the white light
Of the cold water’s twists
(Twining softly, so softly)
Its valleys and rifts
And in watery ribbons
Find the depths of the world

But I—
Quite alone in the dark night—
Being mortal, cannot

I wrote this poem for :iconlovetodeviate:'s Walking in April contest, an event in honor of NaPoWriMo. The basic idea was to walk about during April, record impressions, and write a poem about them. Being the sort of person who rarely goes to sleep at a reasonable time, I tend to wander about anyhow (generally in the middle of the night), especially since the college campus I live on has a nearby river. My midnight rambles (and a certain respect for T.S. Eliot's "Rhapsody on a Windy Night") served as the raw material for this piece.

Wow... I can easily visualize the scene from the imagery and the sounds and words are so soft and soothing. Any particular reason two of the stanzas have an extra line over the others? Love the repetition of lines and form.

Yays to the Kelly for being all supportive and stuff! :smooch: No particular reason for the extra lines; it just seemed to fit and I hate being too predictable. Heh heh... I wrote a good deal of this in A & P lab instead of paying attention to anything the teacher was saying... Poetry is ruining my attention span.

Thank you! :thanks: I'm glad you like it. I'm just hoping it's enough to win.

:aww: Thank you! Your comments always make me feel good.

And yeah, if I hadn't worked on another poem after submitting this one and before going to bed, I think I would have had this repeating in my head while I slept, which would have a been a little maddening.

I thought your two pieces were for The Literati's contest? This one is for the Walking in April one, although I'm working on one for The Literati as well...

Anyhow, good luck to you too! :D

Eh, 'tis perfectly fine, I often lose track as well. I'm not sure whose submitted, Literati hasn't posted anything yet, but I hope they will soon. That little club is growing pretty nicely now. (Yays!)
